Zumba gets kids to dance into fitness

Sounds of salsa filled the Motion Studioat the HammerFit Athletic Club in Essex as children bebopped their way in to greet Zumba instructor Allison Dincecco of South Burlington. Shes been dancing her way into physical fitness since she was a child but never wanted to be a trainer until Zumba came along.

I had discovered international music and dancing prior to Zumba, and it came along and met all my needs, she said. Its a one-hour party where you can burn between 600 and 800 calories.

Zumba is a dance-aerobics workout to Latin music created by fitness trainer Beto Perez of Colombia in the 1990s. Now its taught worldwide at more than 40,000 locations in 75 countries. Dincecco said about 87 classes are offered a week by more than 22 instructors in Chittenden County. And the sport has expanded. It has grown to include Zumba Gold for seniors, Zumba Toning using weights, Zumbatomic for children and Aqua Zumba in the pool.

Its not like the old-style aerobics, Dincecco said. When we put on salsa, were dancing salsa. When we put on merengue, were dancing merengue, and we do mostly non-verbal cueing which sets us apart. This type of dance fitness is sweeping the nation and we are putting Essex on the map for Zumba.

HammerFit Athletic Club owner Jessica Ebert Edelmann of Colchester said her club has organized the first annual Zumba Retreat Weekend.

We are really excited to be bringing two of the top trainers to Vermont and having a retreat weekend at The Essex, she said. Zumba instructors will be coming here from all over the country to get certified.

The family-owned club also offers Zumba birthday parties and is planning a Valentines Day Zumba class for husbands and wives. Membership is not required to participate in classes held in the Motion Studio. The studio opened in July.

Zumbatomic classes began in the fall.

Its been a real blast and were not only teaching these kids how to move, were teaching them about overall fitness, Spanish and teamwork all while having fun, Dincecco said. Everyone has a smile when they come to Zumba.
